Quick Verdict

A moody, adult-rated romance that swings for emotional devastation but keeps fumbling the ball. Strong intentions, uneven execution, and a leading pair doing their absolute best to keep the whole thing afloat. It's not a disaster - it's a near-miss, which is somehow more frustrating.

Story

Abhimanyu (Vishal Mohan Mandawara) is the kind of brooding romantic lead Hindi cinema loves to birth: intense, a little lost, and convinced love is something you suffer through rather than enjoy. He meets a woman (Pragati Prakash Tiwari) whose name the marketing team apparently decided we didn't need to know in the synopsis, and what follows is a slow-burn courtship that curdles into something heavier. There's family pressure, there's a village backdrop (Suvinder Vicky and Kuldeep Singh round out the supporting ranks), and there's a whole lot of staring into the middle distance while violins do their thing.

Bhadana, who also appears on screen, keeps the plot deliberately small-scale - this isn't a sweeping epic, it's a chamber piece about two people and the walls closing in around them. The A rating tips you off early that this won't be a breezy meet-cute. Think heartbreak with teeth, not roses and rain songs.

Review

Let's start with the good news: Mandawara has a face built for suffering, and he uses every inch of it. There's a scene - you'll know it when you get there - where he doesn't say a word for what feels like three full minutes and still lands the emotional gut-punch. Tiwari matches him beat for beat in the quieter moments; her character gets the short end of the writing stick, but she squeezes real humanity out of underwritten material. When these two share the frame, the film briefly becomes the movie it clearly wants to be.

The problem is everything around them. Bhadana the director has obvious affection for slow, contemplative cinema, but Bhadana the scriptwriter forgot that contemplation needs something to contemplate. The middle stretch sags like a wet dupatta - subplots about family honor and small-town gossip get introduced and dropped, supporting characters wander in to deliver exposition and then vanish. Kuldeep Singh and Suvinder Vicky are capable actors handed thankless roles; you can practically see them waiting for a scene with actual stakes.

And then there's the ending. Without spoiling anything, let's just say the film confuses "ambiguous" with "unfinished." A certain TMDb user score of 0/10 floating around out there feels like the internet being dramatic - this is nowhere near that bad - but you understand the frustration. The film's biggest sin isn't being bad; it's being almost good, which stings more.

Technically, it's a mixed bag too. The camerawork has moments of genuine beauty - one golden-hour sequence is straight-up gorgeous - but the pacing is glacial, and the background score never met a silence it didn't want to smother with strings. For a 122-minute runtime, it feels closer to 150.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Mandawara and Tiwari's chemistry carries entire sequences on their shoulders
  • A handful of genuinely moving, well-observed moments
  • The small-scale, intimate approach is refreshing in a season of spectacle
  • Some striking cinematography, especially in outdoor scenes

Cons:

  • Meandering middle act with dropped subplots
  • Underwritten female lead despite a committed performance
  • Overbearing score that doesn't trust its own silences
  • An ending that resolves nothing and satisfies less
  • Supporting cast wasted on thin material

Final Verdict

Love Story Abhimanyu Ki is the cinematic equivalent of a first draft with a great cast attached - the feelings are real, the follow-through isn't. If you're a die-hard romance junkie who lives for angsty, adult-rated love stories and can forgive a sluggish middle, there's enough here to make a streaming night worthwhile once it hits OTT. Everyone else? Wait for the reviews to settle and your patience to recharge. Two and a half stars, a lot of potential, and one very frustrated reviewer who wanted to love it.
