Quick Verdict

Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar is the cinematic equivalent of a plate of chaat: tangy, chaotic, occasionally too much, but you keep going back for another bite. It's 150 minutes long, which is a commitment, and it doesn't always earn that runtime. But if you've ever had a first love and a second chance - or just love watching attractive people make questionable romantic decisions - there's plenty here to chew on.

Story

The setup is deceptively simple. Three school friends attend their reunion, and before the welcome drinks are even cleared, they've each tumbled into a different relationship. What unfolds is a tangle of rekindled flames, new sparks, and the kind of misunderstandings that only happen when everyone refuses to use their words.

One thread follows a second-chance romance where old feelings resurface faster than you can say "we were just kids." Another sees a friendship tip dangerously into something more, with all the awkward glances that implies. The third goes for the chaos: a relationship that starts as a joke and ends... well, that would be spoiling it.

The film is genuinely interested in the absurdity of love - how adults with jobs and mortgages still act like teenagers when someone smiles at them the right way. It doesn't always nail the landing, but the ambition is there.

Review

Let's start with what works. The ensemble cast is charming, and that counts for a lot in a movie that asks you to follow six people across 150 minutes. Alisha Chopra brings a warm groundedness to her role, while Sparsh Walia does the "charming but clueless" thing with genuine appeal. Sakshi Vaidya and Kunal Vaid have a playful chemistry that makes their scenes pop, and Sargun Kaur Luthra and Tushar Chhibber round out the group with energy to spare.

Director Anuj Saini clearly loves his characters, and that affection is infectious for most of the runtime. The comedy lands more often than it misses, mostly because the cast plays it straight instead of winking at the camera. There's a scene involving a reunion dance performance gone wrong that had the theater genuinely laughing - and it's not the punchline you expect.

Where the film stumbles is in its pacing. At 150 minutes, Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar has stretches where nothing happens except people staring meaningfully at each other while a piano plays. The second act drags hard, with at least twenty minutes that could have been trimmed without losing a single plot point. And the drama occasionally tips into melodrama - there's a third-act conflict built entirely on a misheard conversation that will make you want to throw your popcorn.

Still, when the film works, it works. The "allure and absurdity" promise is kept in scenes where love makes people do ridiculous things - gate-crashing a family dinner, sending a text and immediately regretting it, showing up at someone's workplace with a grand gesture that's 60% sweet and 40% restraining order.

The film knows it's not reinventing the genre. It's a warm, slightly overlong hug of a movie that understands exactly what it's here to do: make you laugh, make you feel a little something, and maybe call your ex. (Don't call your ex.)

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Genuinely likable ensemble cast with real chemistry
  • Comedy that lands without trying too hard
  • Sweet, sincere approach to the "second chance at love" theme
  • Standout dance-and-drama set piece at the reunion

Cons

  • 150-minute runtime feels every minute of it in the second act
  • Third-act conflict relies on a tired miscommunication trope
  • Some dramatic beats tip into melodrama
  • A couple of subplots get rushed resolutions despite all that runtime

Final Verdict

Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar isn't going to redefine the romantic comedy-drama, and it's got a serious case of second-act bloat. But it's warm, it's funny, and its cast makes you care about these loveably messy people. Catch it on a lazy Sunday with people you love - and maybe a snack, because 150 minutes is a long time. A decent date-night pick, even if your date is just your dog and a bowl of popcorn.
