The setup is a classic clash of worlds. Raj Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan) is a wealthy, carefree, second-generation NRI living the high life in London. Simran Singh (Kajol) is the daughter of Chaudhry Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri), an intensely traditional man who loves his homeland and strictly enforces Indian values in his household.
After a chance meeting on a Eurail trip across Europe, Raj and Simran clash, banter, and-naturally-fall deeply in love. But there is a massive catch: Simran has already been promised to Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi), her childhood fiancé back in India. Instead of eloping, Raj makes a daring choice. He travels to Punjab with a singular mission: to embed himself in Simran’s family and win over her strict father, claiming his bride right under the noses of everyone involved.
